Newton, a little stray cat found in Lansdowne, has an amazing story to tell. He was rescued a few weeks ago from about 60 feet up in a tree in Lansdowne by John Grier of Best Tree Service in Malvern. The rescue was nothing short of heroic, and John and his partner Dana would not accept payment for their amazing work, being fellow animal lovers. To all of our surprise, Newton arrived back on the ground with a horribly shattered right hind leg. He received very specialized orthopedic surgery by Dr. Dietrich Franczuszki at the Veterinary Referral Center in Frazier. Newton is a very special, laid-back and affectionate cat, and everyone at the hospital fell in love with him, even some self-professed "non cat people!"
A few days after Newton came home to stay safely in a huge dog crate to prevent him from jumping and reinjuring his leg, Kevin noticed that he was favoring the leg much more than he had been. We got him back to see the surgeon, who informed us that even with the six pins that he had implanted, something had shifted and Newton now needed a second surgery. The very next morning, an "external fixator" was installed on the outside of Newton's leg [see photo] to further stabilize it and to make him more comfortable. Newton came back home that same night and, I am happy to report, is doing much better now, though he will have the external hardware on for several weeks. His surgeon rechecked him two weeks later, removed his sutures and gave us an excellent report.
If you have already given to Newton's Fund, thank you so very much for your very kind support and your donations. Newton's medical bills are now in the $4000 range, which is a huge amount for a small local rescue. We have raised about $2500 so far, which is wonderful, and we are still accepting donations earmarked for Newton's care. An article published in the Delaware County Daily Times has been enormously helpful to our efforts, and we thank the paper for their coverage of Newton's story. Please send your Newton's Fund donation to: Animal Friends of Lansdowne P.O. Box 869 Lansdowne, PA 19050 or use PayPal via our website, animalfriendsoflansdowne.com Thank you! |
